KVPY, which is an abbreviation for Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana is an all India scholarship examination to find out the best talent in the field of Science. KVPY aims at identifying students who have an aptitude for Science and Research and encouraging them to choose these fields as their careers.
KVPY was started in the year 1999 by Department of Science and Technology (which is also the nodal agency for this exam) to nurture the identified exceptional talent at the right age in order to aid Research and Development in the country. Students who are identified through KVPY are provided generous fellowships and contingency grant for a period of 5 years or up to the pre Ph.D. level, whichever is earlier. Department of Science and Technology has further entrusted the responsibility of conducting the exam and managing the KVPY programme to Indian Institute of Science (IISc.), Bangalore who in turn has set up a management as well as a National Advisory Committee or NAC to oversee smooth implementation of the whole programme. Summer camps across the prestigious and reputed institutes all over India are also organised to boost up the morale of KVPY fellows.
