JEE, which is an abbreviation for Joint Entrance Examination is an all India compulsory examination for entrance in various engineering colleges of India. JEE consists of two parts- JEE Main (Earlier IIT JEE) and JEE Advanced.
JEE Main is an entry level entrance exam for admission to the undergraduate engineering programs in top Govt. or Govt. funded engineering institutes of India like Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIIts). National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs) and other such prestigious institutes. JEE Main exam is conducted by NTA (National Testing Agency) set up by Ministry of Education, Govt. of India JEE. Students who wish to appear in the JEE Main Exam can do so twice in a year with the exams being conducted in the months of January and April. Students also have the option to appear for one or both the exams. The ranks or merit lists are prepared taking the better of two scores.
Eligibility:
The application for JEE Main exam is subject to the condition that the candidate should have secured at least 75% marks in the 12th class examination, or be in the top 20 percentile in the 12th class examination conducted by the respective Boards. For SC/ST candidates the qualifying marks would be 65% in the 12thclass examination.
Mathematics and Physics are compulsory subjects along with Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology.
Although there is no limit of age to appear in JEE Main, a candidate can attempt for three consecutive years from the year he/she appears in class XII exam. Since one attempt includes the two exams of January and April of the same year, a candidate has a total of six chances to clear the JEE Main exam.
Structure:
The JEE Main exam consists of two papers- Paper I and Paper II. Paper-I is for admission into B.E. and B.Tech programmes of the above mentioned institutes while Paper II is for admission into programmes into B.Arch and B.Plan. JEE Main Paper I is also an eligibility test exam for JEE Advanced with top 2,50,000 students in JEE Main qualifying to appear for JEE Advanced.
